Prepare a bank statement CSV for Xero
Put dates and signed transaction amounts in a consistent file, then review the field mapping and date format in your destination account.
Start with a transaction table
FolioTern accepts Date and Description plus either a signed Amount column or separate Debit and Credit columns. For a signed Amount column, income is positive and outgoings are negative. Balances are optional, but they help the review.
Review before export
Correct invalid dates and missing amounts. Review possible duplicates and compare the statement totals. The currency field is a label only: it does not convert currencies or establish the currency of your Xero account.
Choose Xero-format CSV
The export contains Date, Amount, Payee, Description and Reference columns. Dates use YYYY/MM/DD; credits minus debits produce the signed Amount. Payee is blank rather than an invented contact, and Reference identifies the source page.
Import in a controlled batch
The export supports up to 1,000 rows per Xero file. In Xero, review your bank account, column mapping and date format before completing an import. Test a small batch first and avoid importing transactions already present in the account.
Keep the original
Keep the source statement and reviewed spreadsheet in your own records. A successful file download is not proof that transactions were imported or reconciled correctly.
